Nerdy facts about mesh fabric

Nerd: “A person who is deeply interested in a particular subject.” There’s nothing a nerd likes better than detailed descriptions and technical specifications. We’re lucky enough to have a couple material nerds at BABYBJÖRN.

A detailed fact sheet won’t enhance the quality of a baby product, but the more you learn, the easier it is for you to make the right choice. You may appreciate your choice of baby carrier even more if you know a few “nerdy” facts about the materials we use. Let Lisen, our textile guru at BABYBJÖRN, be your guide!

It all started with a damp patch

In 2005, BABYBJÖRN let some families with young children test baby carriers made from a mesh fabric. The positive reactions from the parents were instantaneous: “Maybe now we will not have to walk around with damp patches on our stomachs!”

Closeness, the most wonderful aspect of carrying your baby, can also act as a deterrent since the combined body heat from you and your baby could easily become too much.

In some countries, the combination of a hot, damp climate, body heat and closely woven fabric poses a real problem. In extreme cases, your child may feel unwell and show signs of heatstroke.

Heatstroke occurs when the body’s ability to control its temperature doesn’t work, e.g. during a heatwave. Young babies normally are not able to sweat yet, which makes them particularly susceptible to heat.

None of the mesh fabrics available in 2005 were soft enough for babies. Mesh fabric was mainly used for protective clothing, sportswear and healthcare products. So we created our own soft, 3D mesh that was perfect for babies. And that was how it all began.

We then created the perfect sandwich

BABYBJÖRN uses three different types of mesh fabric in its baby carriers. Each of these mesh fabrics has different characteristics that complement the other two in terms of elasticity, softness and stability. All three are quick-drying, durable, colorfast and wrinkleproof. They are also allergen-free.

What makes our mesh fabrics so unique is that they’re soft and child-friendly while still allowing air and moisture to pass. Every movement you make when carrying your child in the carrier cools you both down. Breathable mesh fabrics!

Our sophisticated 3D mesh

The 3D mesh is the most sophisticated of our mesh fabrics. It consists of three layers knitted during a single process. Yes, that’s right, the mesh is actually knitted!

The 3D mesh has a classic “sandwich” design, a top and bottom layer with a filling in-between. But in our sandwich, the ‘bread’ consists of a thin mesh and the ‘filling’ an extremely fine, single-strand fiber. The result is a light, airy and soft mesh!

Another method that can be used to join the layers is lamination. However, if the layers were laminated instead of knitted, the end result would be more like a very old, dry sandwich – harder, stiffer and much less airy.

It’s the single-strand fiber in the middle layer that makes the mesh so cozy, and it is the knitting technique that makes it so airy. Just feel Baby Carrier We Air – the material is soft and bouncy like a mini mattress!

Soft mesh – for the baby’s sake

The second material is an extremely soft mesh. Babies not only have delicate skin, but they also tend to suck and chew on whatever they can reach. It is essential for the material we use to be as soft as possible for baby cheeks and tiny mouths.

We therefore use an extremely soft mesh for the areas in our baby carries that will touch the baby’s skin.

A durable, non-elastic mesh

The third mesh we use is a non-elastic mesh. Non-elastic mesh provides much-needed stability. We use it as the outer fabric on all of our mesh baby carriers.

It is a soft, thin material that is extremely durable, and it is also used as furnishing fabric. Its durability helps it withstand wear and tear and daily use!
